Kenneth P. Price, Ph.D., is an award-winning author, clinical psychologist, researcher, and longtime student of human behavior. Across his professional life, he examined how people respond to stress, trauma, adversity, and change.
For Price, Separated Together is also deeply personal. Abe and Sonia Huberman were the parents of his wife, Gloria. Their story of love, war, separation, survival, and reunion became part of the family history he inherited through marriage. Drawing on years of interviews, archival investigation, and historical reconstruction, he set out to preserve that history with the care of both a family member and a scholar.
A psychologist’s perspective
Price received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University with honors in psychology and also studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Hayim Greenberg Institute in Jerusalem.
His academic and professional career spanned more than four decades. Early in his career, he trained and worked at the Northport Veterans Administration Hospital on Long Island and taught at Stony Brook. From 1976 to 1980, he served as an instructor and then assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Psychology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas, now UT Southwestern Medical Center. His work there combined teaching and research with clinical service in the medical school’s pain clinic.
As a researcher, Price investigated stress, hypertension, migraine, biofeedback, psychosomatic disorders, anxiety, and depression. His work appeared in scientific and professional publications including the Journal of Experimental Psychology, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychophysiology, Headache, Hypertension, Journal of Psychosomatic Research, Journal of Clinical Psychology, and Defense Law Journal. His early research received support from the National Institute of Mental Health.
From 1980 until his retirement in 2020, Price maintained an independent clinical, forensic, and consulting psychology practice. He consulted or served as an expert witness in dozens of legal cases. Beginning in 2016, he evaluated more than 300 U.S. military veterans seeking compensation for service-connected psychological injuries, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder.
From recollection to record
He also co-edited Contemporary Readings in Psychopathology and Clinical Applications of Biofeedback: Appraisal and Status. Separated Together, published by Amsterdam Publishers, brought the disciplines of research and psychology to an intimate family history. It received the 2021 Readers’ Favorite Silver Medal in the Non-Fiction—Historical category.
